Remark by Janssens, F. 2023.09.21: The authors claim to create a new subfamily Sphaeridiainae of Sminthurididae. At the same time they state that the new subfamily name is "a replacement name for Sphaeridiinae Richard(sic), 1968". Obviously this contradiction is clear evidence of an inadvertent error that must be corrected (Art.32.5.1). Hence we propose that the new name "Sphaeridiainae Schneider & D'Haese, 2023" is to be considered an incorrect subsequent spelling of "Sphaeridinae Richards, 1968". |
Remark by Janssens, F. 2023.09.21: The authors applied ICZN Recommendation 29A in error. Rec.29A is applicable in case the name of a *new* tribe/subfamily would cause a *new* homonymy. In the current case, the homonymy already existed since Richards (1968) but it was overlooked until Mikko Pentinsaari revealed it in March of this year. See notes below. This is clear evidence of an inadvertent error that must be corrected (Art.32.5.1). Hence we propose that the new name "Sphaeridiaini Schneider & D'Haese, 2023" is to be considered an incorrect subsequent spelling of "Sphaeridini Richards, 1968". |
Remark by Janssens, F. 2022.11.13: Based on Betsch (1980:125-127) and Medeiros & al (2022:7,19), tentatively we define Sphaeridiini(sic) as genera with the distal tibiotarsus III organ absent. |
Remark by Pentinsaari, M. 2023.03.07: The tribe Sphaeridiini Richards, 1968 (Sminthurididae) is a junior homonym of Sphaeridiini Latreille, 1802, used at both subfamily and tribe ranks in Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae, type genus Sphaeridium Fabricius, 1775. |
Remark by Pentinsaari, M., Cipola, N.G. & Janssens, F. 2023.06.19,2023.08.30: Richards applied "Sphaeridi-" as stem of "Sphaeridia" to create the new tribe "Sphaeridiini". Apparently Richards was not aware of the name Sphaeridiini Latreille, 1802. The homonymy with Sphaeridiini Latreille, 1802 is clear evidence of an inadvertent error that must be corrected (Art.32.5.1). Hence we propose the tribe name "Sphaeridiini Richards, 1968" is to be considered an incorrect original spelling of "Sphaeridini Richards, 1968" wich is based on the stem "Sphaerid-" of type genus "Sphaeridia". |
Remark by Janssens, F. 2008.03.13: Mackenziella is currently ambiguous due to Voronova, L.G. et al., 1987 (Mollusca). |
Remark by Janssens, F. 2022.11.13: Based on Betsch (1980:125) and Medeiros & al (2022:7,19), tentatively we define Sminthuridini as genera with the distal tibiotarsus III organ present. |
Remark by Betsch, J.-M. 1980:124: [Spinosellina] s'agit exclusivement du premier stade des genres Sminthurides, Jeannenotia, Denisiella. |
Remark by Palissa, A. 1964:240: Lawrence, 1963 halt dentospinalis für ein Jugendform einer anderen Sminthurides-Art. |
Remark by Palissa, A. 2000:120: S. dentospinalis ist ein Jugendstadium einer anderen Sminthurides-Art (Fjellberg, 1974). |
Remark by ICZN. 2007:759: [Sminthurides] Placed on the Official List of Names in Zoology. Opinion 291. |
Remark by Janssens, F. 2022.08.25: According to the etymology, "pejelagarto" is a vernacular Mexican name of a fish from the Tabasca state. The ICZN Rec.11A discourages the use of vernacular words as scientific names. Given appropriate latinisation is the prefered means of formation of names from vernacular words, "pejelagartus" would be an example of an appropriate name in line with Rec.11A. Now it is only a matter of time for the new 'Sminthurides fishandchips' from the UK to emerge ;-) |
Remark by Janssens, F. 2017.03.03: With white circumlateral band. |
Remark by Janssens, F. 2023.07.10: According to the diagnosis of the new genus : "The gender of the name is neutral". However, based on the new species name 'helibionta', and compared to the genus name 'Sminthuridia', which gender is feminin (cfr Ellis & Bellinger, 1973:11), it is clear that the authors intended the gender to be 'feminin'. This mismatch is clear evidence of an inadvertent error. Hence, the gender of the new genus name is to be considered 'feminin'. |
Remark by Janssens, F. 2023.07.11: The description of the new species has been provided only in a supplementary file. Given this file is an electronic copy in Word format, thus without fixed content and layout, the file does not constitute a published work (Art.8.1.3.2). In addition, given this file is an electronic publication which is not registered in Zoobank, it does not constitute a published work (Art.8.5.3). Although the description is unpublished, the new names of genus and species are not nomina nuda given the diagnoses of both names have been published in the non-electronic part of the original publication and can be interpreted as short descriptions. |
